Flowers: A Conversion Story

I have had a conversion experience in regard to flowers. I used to think they were unneccesary wastes of space, hogging soil that should be dedicated to hard-working vegetable crops.

Boy, was I wrong! Those flowers ARE hard-working. Every day they attract pollinators - butterflies, bees, wasps, and more - who are responsible for fertilizing what will become tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, etc. Without those pollinators, we don't get these wonderful veggies!

But that's not all they do. They also lift the spirits of the gardener, their colors bringing joy and somehow, peace. Go figure. I love them now! Here are a few growing in our little yard.

Zinnia

"Wandering Jew"

Lantana carera

Lettuces

Rattlesnake Bean Blossoms

Future Tomato Sandwiches!

Black-Eyed Susan
