Summer Started Today!

This week marks the beginning of summer for us.  Not because it's especially hot (though the temp is rising!) or because the season officially has begun (summer solstice is June 20 this year).  No, summer has begun because the Rattlesnake Beans are here!

I couldn't help but think of Amie's grandfather, Paw-Paw, who originally grew those beans back in the '90's and earlier. They sat in a freezer for more than a decade after he died, but two years ago they came back to life in our soil blocks, and now we're in the second generation since that rebirth. Some of you who bought Rattlesnake Beans from us will carry on that genetic tradition that goes all the way back to Paw-Paw's little plot of land just south of the airport in Atlanta, and maybe all the way back to Alabama, where he lived until he moved to Atlanta more than 40 years ago.

And the Boston Pickling Cucumbers have arrived, too!  Time to start makin' pickles!

We've already enjoyed mulberries, strawberries, and blueberries (due to the warm winter), but something about the summer crops coming in makes me excited.  As I was pulling suckers off the tomato plants today I saw a few prophetic flowers - tomatoes will be here soon!

How about you?  What marks the beginning of summer for you and your family?
